For 44 years, the quaint coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island has welcomed visitors from near and far to the Newport International Boat Show, one of the largest in-water boat shows in the country. Visitors come to check out the latest powerboats and sailboats stretched across 13 acres of Newport’s historical waterfront, but stay to experience everything the 375 year-old Colonial town has to offer.
Founded in 1639, Newport is home to spectacular coastal scenery, a lively waterfront downtown, a vibrant artistic community and culinary gems, making it the perfect next stop on The Rhode Yacht’s road trip across New England. No road trip is complete without traveling tunes and a sense of freedom and adventure, so The Rhode Yacht stopped at three classic New England events before heading to the boat show. After singing along to folk music at the Newport Folk Festival and cheering on the sailors at the 2014 Vineyard Cup and the Newport Bermuda Race, it was time to settle down for a few days and experience some of the history and flavor unique to Newport.
The morning starts with visits to the latest powerboat and sailboat models being unveiled to the public during show hours. Because Sunbrella fabric has deep roots in the sailing world with fabrics ideal for durable enclosures or upholstery that can withstand the rigors of the sea, it’s no surprise when we come across new boats already outfitted with durable and stylish Sunbrella marine fabric.
After a long day of visiting vendors on land and on sea, it’s time to head back to The Rhode Yacht to unwind with a glass of wine and the perfect New England treat – fresh-caught lobster soaked in butter and piled into a humble hot dog bun. Enjoying a delicious lobster roll in a picturesque city on the sea surrounded by the ocean breeze and a cozy retreat is the ultimate in New England-style rest and relaxation.
The Rhode Yacht and its tour across New England is part of Perspective New England, a design journey exploring the versatility of Sunbrella fabrics for every aspect of your life—at home, on the water or on an adventure.
